When you taste Rosso Spina, you immediately understand why the Peccia family chose these hills of Marsciano for their project. This isn't just another Umbrian red wine - it's the result of a passion passed down through generations, where every decision comes from genuine love for this extraordinary territory.
The Land That Makes the Difference
The vines grow on soils that tell an ancient story. Here in the Colli Perugini, clay mixes with limestone creating that minerality you taste from the very first sip. The family chose low Guyot pruning not to follow trends, but because after years of trials they discovered this method helps grapes ripen better, concentrating all those aromas you'll later find in your glass.
The Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and Nebbiolo blend wasn't created on paper. It's the result of experimentation, of harvests spent understanding how these two varietals work together on this specific terroir. Montepulciano brings structure and character, while Nebbiolo adds that finesse that makes this Italian red wine truly special.
How It's Made in the Cellar
Every September, when the grapes reach perfect ripeness, hand-harvesting begins. Those small baskets aren't just for show - they prevent damaging the berries during transport. In the cellar, fermentation happens slowly, without rushing, in temperature-controlled steel tanks.
Then comes twelve months in French oak. Not new barrels that would overpower the wine, but casks of different ages that add complexity without dominating. The result? Only 3,800 bottles per year, because quality can't be rushed and definitely can't be mass-produced.
A Wine Worth Waiting For
Rosso Spina is one of those wines that rewards your patience. Serve it at 16-18°C and watch how it opens in the glass, revealing aromas that change minute by minute. It's perfect with a grilled steak or Sunday braised meat, but it's also wonderful on its own for those pure moments of satisfaction.
It has aging potential of 5-8 years, but honestly, it's already delicious now. On the palate it's balanced, with present but never aggressive tannins, and a finish that makes you want another sip.
