Mare Antico captures the very essence of Decugnano dei Barbi, an Orvieto Classico Superiore DOC created from Pliocene ground containing marine fossil and three-million-year-old shells. This Umbrian white is imbued with the millennium-long heritage of a property making wine since 1212 and now guided by Enzo Barbi with celebrated consultant winemaker Riccardo Cotarella.
Ancient Marine Terroir and Artisanal Winemaking
Mare Antico vineyards are situated on volcanic and sandy soils at 320 meters altitude, on which Grechetto (55%), Vermentino (20%), Chardonnay (20%) and Procanico (5%) vineyards develop. Stainless steel winemaking is typical with 5% barrique fermentation, aged for 6 months on fine lees and 12 months in bottle.
Tasting Profile and International Recognition
The wine is a radiant golden-yellow hue with aromas of tropical fruit, lavender and elderflower, underlaid by mineral and salt. In the mouth it's smooth, velvety and mineral, with sensations of iodine reminiscent of the ancient sea. Mare Antico has earned acclaim from leading Italian wine guides, including Gambero Rosso, as well as praise from renowned international critics and experts.
Food Pairing Excellence
Pairs really well with complex fish dishes, shellfish, lavish pasta and aged cheeses. Its aging potential and complexity make it perfect as an aperitif or at the mealtime, at 10-12°C.
