Filare Maiore isn’t just another white wine from Umbria. Around Spina, locals have always known it by its old nickname, “Trubbianello”—a grape that’s stubborn, a bit wild, and unmistakably tied to these hills. For years, it survived in small family plots, quietly resisting the trends that swept through the region. Only recently has it stepped back into the spotlight, thanks to producers like Cantina La Spina who saw its potential and refused to let it fade away.
The Soul of Colli Perugini
Filare Maiore comes from the “maiore,” the best rows of the vineyard—where the clay and limestone soils of the Colli Perugini give the grape its character and backbone. Here, tradition isn’t a marketing slogan: it’s the way things have always been done. Grapes are picked by hand, early in the morning, and handled with the kind of care that only comes from working your own land.
After a brief maceration on the skins, the juice ferments slowly at low temperatures, then rests for months on its lees. There’s no oak, no shortcuts—just patience, and the desire to let the grape and the land speak for themselves.
What to Expect in the Glass
This wine pours a pale straw yellow with golden reflections. On the nose, you’ll find floral and citrus notes, hints of wild herbs, and that unmistakable scent of fresh hay that says “Umbrian countryside” in every sip. Serve chilled, 8-10°C, and you’ll notice a lively freshness and a mineral edge that lingers long after the last drop.
Filare Maiore is a natural match for raw seafood, herbed risottos, young cheeses, or even a simple soup of local legumes. But honestly, it’s just as enjoyable on its own, especially if you like wines that tell you where they’re from without needing to shout.
