The Ancient Tale of Sagrantino

The valuable wine of Montefalco has a captivating story that goes back thousands of years. Pliny the Elder mentioned this grape variety in ancient times, and it may have originated from Asia, been brought to Umbria by Franciscan friars, or been brought to the region by Saracens from Spain.

Sagrantino has been cultivated for spiritual purposes for centuries and also used for making a sweet wine called as passito. In the 1980s, it gained success mainly by focusing on the dry version. However, only during the 1990s, when it was most popular, Montefalco Sagrantino shifted from being a low-key wine to a well-known Italian finest red wine.

It possesses unique grape characteristics.

The Sagrantino grape grows well in Montefalco’s siliceous-clay soils. It ripens late and has lots of polyphenols. Even in harsh weather, its thick black skin continues to thrive because of the enduring nature of the soil. Although this variety yields a limited amount, the quality of its wines is remarkable. These wines possess a robust, distinctive character that authentically represents the area's distinct environment.

The Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG Scacciadiavoli is a rich and complex wine. It has a deep color and smells of ripe red fruits, citrus, and hints of spice and balsamic. When you taste it, its full-bodied structure and well-integrated tannins create a balanced and refreshing acidity. This wine changes over time, becoming more refined after a few years, as the tannins become softer and balsamic flavors come out.Sagrantino pairs well with roasts, grilled red meats, and aged cheeses and is best enjoyed at a temperature between 18°-19°C. It provides an authentic taste of Umbrian food and wine with every sip.
