White wines

For aperitifs, fish, vegetables and richer Umbrian dishes, a white from Umbria can do two different jobs: keep the meal fresh or bring more body to the table without the tannin of a red. The range includes Grechetto, Trebbiano Spoletino, Orvieto DOC, Chardonnay and Sauvignon grown in Umbria, with styles from light and dry to fuller, more textured bottles.

Fresh whites for lighter dishes

For freshwater fish, salads, grilled vegetables and simple pasta, look for the fresher side of the category: clean fruit, moderate body and a dry finish. Argillae Orvieto Classico DOC Superiore fits this side of the category: an Orvieto white with freshness, citrus notes and enough depth for seafood or vegetable dishes.

Fuller whites for richer food

Trebbiano Spoletino, structured Grechetto and some Umbrian Chardonnay can bring more depth, texture and persistence. Greco di Renabianca fits this role better than a light aperitif white: it is a fuller Grechetto for roast white meats, cheese, truffle dishes, richer pasta or risotto.

When red wine feels too strong

A white can be the better choice when Sagrantino or other tannic reds would overpower the food. Stay with freshness for ease and drinkability; move toward fuller bottles when the dish needs more structure. The choice should stay simple: freshness, body, dish and occasion.
