For those who enjoy the savoury side of Sangiovese, Maestà Quattro Chiavi by Tenuta Bellafonte offers something worth exploring beyond Tuscany. Sour cherry and bitter orange meet hints of tobacco and white pepper, with freshness and finely textured tannins bringing balance to this Umbrian red. Try it with roast duck, slow-cooked beef or aged cheeses.

Made near Bevagna, the wine combines Sangiovese with a smaller proportion of the local Sagrantino grape. Whole-berry fermentation with native yeasts is followed by 36 months in large Slavonian oak casks. The 2019 vintage received 90 points from Wine Enthusiast. Serve at 16-18°C.
