Orvieto wines

For a fresh Umbrian white to serve with starters, lake fish, light pasta or young cheeses, Orvieto is a natural place to look. Orvieto DOC is based on Procanico, also known as Trebbiano Toscano, and Grechetto, giving wines that are usually dry, fresh and easy to pair. This category also includes Orvieto Classico, richer Umbria IGT or IGP whites from nearby estates, and a few reds or sweet wines connected with the area.

Dry whites for light dishes

Choose Orvieto DOC or Orvieto Classico when you want a clean white for antipasti, vegetables, freshwater fish, seafood, light pasta and fresh cheeses. These are bottles to serve chilled, especially when the food needs freshness rather than weight.

Richer whites from the Orvieto area

When you want more body, move to Umbrian whites from the same area. Bramito Antinori, Cervaro della Sala and Verdeluce Cotarella are better choices for fuller dishes, white meats, richer first courses or a more structured white at the table.

Reds and sweet wines from the area

Not every bottle in this category is Orvieto DOC. The selection can also include Umbria IGT or IGP labels, Rosso Orvietano DOC, Lago di Corbara DOC and sweet styles such as late-harvest or Muffato wines. Use Orvieto DOC as the starting point for fresh whites, then move to richer whites, reds or dessert wines when the menu needs more structure, dry pastries, blue cheeses or a bottle for the end of the meal.
